Festival Music Delegation from Chiba Prefecture
This fall a delegation of high school students and cultural leaders visited from Japan through the Chiba-Wisconsin Association. After a five-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this visit marks the return of cultural and educational exchange activities between Wisconsin and its sister-state, Chiba Prefecture.
The group, consisting of six high school students and four adult chaperones, brought the vibrant sounds of Sawara-Bayashi, a traditional Japanese matsuri (festival) performance featuring percussion instruments and the shinobue (Japanese flute). The students, guided by their coach – the renowned shinobue player Mr. Satoshi Katano – shared this centuries-old art form with audiences across Madison and surrounding areas.
In addition to the lively musical performances, the delegation’s visit included cultural tours, homestays, and community engagement opportunities. Madison Country Day School served as the group’s “home base” for their stay, with several local families graciously hosting the students. This unique exchange allows Wisconsin residents to experience Japanese culture firsthand and foster personal connections that bridge the two communities.
Thank you to everyone who made this visit a memorable and meaningful experience for our friends from Chiba!
