Professional Background

Tom Still recently capped a successful 23-year career as president of the Wisconsin Technology Council. He previously worked for the Wisconsin State Journal in a succession of roles, including chief political reporter, editorial page editor and associate editor. Still’s weekly Inside Wisconsin column focuses on public policy, business, politics, and trends in technology – but also touches on aspects of Wisconsin life spawned by five decades of living in the Badger State.

Education

Tom holds a degree in journalism with a minor in history from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Community Involvement

In addition to the JASWI board, Tom serves on boards or advisory groups for the UW-Madison College of Engineering; the Marshfield Clinic Health System; the Wisconsin Security Research Consortium; and First Business Bank. He is also an advisor to Competitive Wisconsin Inc. Still was a senior lecturer for 16 years in the Department of Life Sciences Communication at UW-Madison.

Connection to the JASWI Mission

Tom takes a long view of Wisconsin’s economic development and understands how the state and Japan share common interests – business and cultural. Still moderated the Wisconsin Economic Summits (2000-2003) and helped write the Wisconsin Prosperity Strategy in 2010. Still is the co-author of “Hands-On Environmentalism,” published by Encounter Books, New York, which offered lessons in private-public conservation at home and abroad.

Personal Interests

Tom and his wife, Kathy, enjoy golfing, travel, following major baseball and football teams and simply visiting with friends and relatives. Tom was a co-founder of the Men’s Senior Baseball League of Southern Wisconsin.
